what special day is it today
7 AUGUST HANDLOOM DAY
India celebrates National Handloom Day on 7 August every year. The day is celebrated to honor the handloom weavers in the country and also highlight India's handloom industry. Bhubaneshwar has been chosen as the venue for this day for its rich tradition of handloom. The main objective of organizing National Handloom Day in Bhubaneswar is to empower women and girls.
National Handloom Day focuses on the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and also increases the income of weavers.
First handloom day celebrated in Chennai
Handloom Day was first started in Chennai. Earlier, on the occasion of National Handloom Day, the 'Indian Handloom' logo was unveiled. It was also said that handloom can prove to be a weapon in fighting poverty, as was the Swadeshi movement in the freedom struggle. Modi ji believes that Khadi and handloom products also provide the same enthusiasm as one gets from the love of the mother.
That's why handloom day is celebrated
When the Modi government came to power in 2014, he took the weavers' problem seriously and started working on it. This was the reason that in 2015, it was decided to celebrate National Handloom Day.
Why only on 7 August?
August 7 was chosen as the day to celebrate Handloom Day, because this day has special significance. It is noteworthy that Swadeshi movement started in the country on 7 August 1905 to give new life to domestic products and production units. It was decided to celebrate National Handloom Day on 7 August in memory of the Swadeshi movement. The Prime Minister, while launching Handloom Day in 2015, said that all families must keep at least one Khadi and one handloom product in the house.
Government made these efforts
The government had notified August 7 as National Handloom Day through a Gazette notification on 29 July 2015. It is the effort of the government that the poor get the benefit of government schemes and socially and economically empowering handloom industry. The government has been saying that it is committed to increasing the income of the weavers. The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs also made arrangements for training of weavers under the Ustad scheme so that they could be technically further enriched.
Not only this, in 2015, when National Handloom Day started. The then Minister of Textiles was Smriti Irani. He started the 'I Wear Handloom' campaign on social media with the goal of popularizing handloom wear and helping the weaver community. The effect of this was that many celebrities were strongly supported. As part of this campaign, celebrities wore handloom clothing with the 'I wear handloom' hashtag and posted pictures on social media.
Program being held in Guwahati
This time handloom day celebrations are being held in Guwahati, capital of Assam. But special events are being organized at many places to celebrate this special day. In addition to bringing awareness to the handloom industry, weavers are being honored. During this, people are also being made aware of the ongoing government schemes for Khadi and handloom industry so that more and more people can avail these schemes.
Handloom is the ancient industry of India
Handloom industry has been of special importance in India since ancient times. At that time it was also the only means of livelihood. Goods manufactured from handloom industry are also exported abroad. It is believed that about 7 lakh persons are engaged in various works of this industry. But if we talk about their economic condition, then it can be said that despite all the government claims, their condition remains miserable.
However, in 2017, the government had taken a big decision, saying that weavers would be offered various government services such as Aadhaar and PAN cards at weavers' service centers (WSCs) set up in the country. These centers have become single window service centers along with providing technical assistance to the weavers, but weavers also complain of not getting the right benefits of the services.
Sari twitter trend was run recently
Some time ago an art paper for weavers was printed in a prestigious newspaper. In which the facts were misrepresented. In protest, the trend of 'Hashtag Sari Twitter' was started on the social media micro-blogging site Twitter. Many Chinese women took part in this trend and posted their pictures with the hashtag Sari Twitter. During this, an Unofficial Sari Day was declared on Twitter.
