Interim Government On 2 September 1946, the newly elected Constituent Assembly formed the Interim Government of India which remained in existence till 15 August 1947. The executive branch of the interim government was functioning by the Viceroy's Executive Council, which was headed by the Viceroy. In August 1946, the Congress decided to join the Interim Government to simplify the process of transfer of power for the British Government. The interim government started functioning from 2 September 1946.There were a total of 12 members including 3 Muslim members nominated by the Congress. After the arrival of British in India, this was the first time when the Indian government was in the hands of Indians. On 26 October, 5 members nominated by the league joined it and manipulated members appointed by Congress to make room for these new members (two seats were already vacant besides Sharat Bose, Syed Ali Zaheer and Sir Shafat Ahmad Khan resigned). The departments of all the fourteen mem
