Bhika Ji Cama was born on 24 September 1861 in Bombay (present-day Mumbai). His father Sorab ji Patel was a rich man. Their upbringing and education etc. took place in a western environment. The All India National Congress was established in December 1885, since then it became its member.

When the plague spread in Bombay, Madame Cama busied herself in relief work, due to which she herself became ill. Healed up after treatment but was still very weak. He was sent to England in 1902 under the pretext of treatment.

She reached London in 1905 via Germany, Scotland, and France, etc. where she met Dada Bhai Naoroji, a famous freedom fighter and economic thinker. Worked as his personal secretary for one and a half years, during which he was introduced to the expatriate patriots and scholars. Most of all, she was impressed by the thoughts and speeches of Shri Shyam ji Krishna Varma.

Shri Mati Cama impressed everyone with his impressive speech and inspired him by spreading enthusiasm among Indians.

The first format of the Indian flag was prepared by Mrs. Cama in London in 1905 in collaboration with her revolutionary colleagues. The first format consisted of stripes of three colors - green, red and saffron. The top was a red stripe with eight blooms. Lotus was the symbol of the eight regions of erstwhile India. In the middle of the Kesari colored strip was written 'Vande Mataram' in Devanagari, on the green strip below was shown a semi-moon on the right and the rising sun on the left. In this flag, the red color was considered as a symbol of power, Kesari was the symbol of victory and green was a symbol of elation and enthusiasm, Kesari was first hoisted in Berlin and then in 1909 in Bengal.

Impressed by Mrs. Bhikaji Cama's personality, diligence and working style, the British invited him several times for the honor, but he expressed his inability to be respected by any foreigner. The contribution of Bhikaji Cama is very important in the freedom struggle. The work done by him was a source of inspiration for many patriots. This great patriotic woman took her last breath at Parsi General Hospital in Mumbai on 13th august 1936. The last word of this great patriot was Vande Mataram.
